What is a senior care referral agency and why should you use one?

When a loved one can no longer live on their own because of conditions such as dementia, alzheimers, diabetes or maybe just if they cannot walk without assistance or bathe without assistance anymore it may be time to consider a board and care facility for the elderly.

What type of care you or your loved one needs and where to obtain this care is a difficult and time-consuming decision. A good referral agency should be able to help you save a lot of time and money and ultimately find the best long term senior care choice for your loved one.

  • Help you weigh the costs and benefits of each type of care (Home-Care, RCFE, Assisted Living) – the primary concern should be the right level of care and comfort for your loved one, the agency should also be very sensitive to your budget and should help guide you to the “best value” care – best care for the budget that you have.

  • Once you have decided on a particular type of care the agency should help you identify potential providers – the agency should save you time here by pre-screening the providers to make sure they are within your budget, can provide the right level of care and are located in the preferred geographical area. RCFE locations and contact numbers are listed on the Department of Social Services website however calling each one , finding availability, budgets, whether they have had violations or citations can be very time-consuming – this is what the referral agency will do for you in addition to visiting the facilities.

  • Once you have received the list of potential facilities the referral agency should have a representative visit these with you – to make sure to ask the facility owners the right questions and to help you with negotiation – the agency representative should also make you aware of what the facility can charge and cannot charge for and what acceptable price ranges are.

  • Once you have chosen a particular facility the referral agent will typically call you periodically to see how your loved one is doing and whether there are any issues with the facility.

How much do referral agency services cost?

Referral agency services should be FREE to you and your loved one. The agency is paid for its services by the facility owners in case your loved one is best suited by a residential care facility for the elderly. Advice is always FREE regardless of whether you choose to go with a certain type of care or not.

A good referral agency should become your trusted adviser who will help you make all your decisions as you loved ones care needs evolve over time.
